Tales of Nippon: Enero 9, January 9th

Esta vez me dedique a explorar la zona. Como en Togane no encontre nada de interes, decidi ir al cercano pueblo de Naruto, esperando que hubiese algo, pero hay menos que en Togane. Este es un pueblo dedicado a las fresas, no hay nada mas.

Viendo el mapa de la imagen, se me ocurrio acercarme al mar, pero resulta que eran unos 11 o 12 kilometros, asi que no llegue, jajaja, me canse de andar en medio de la nada y me volvi.

Es una pena que en el pueblo no este el puente que lleva el mismo nombre, eso si que vale la pena verlo.

This time I decided to explore the area. Since there's nothing of interest in Togane, I decided to go to the neartown of Naruto, hopeing there would be something there, but there's less than in Togane. It's a town dedicated to strawberries, nothing else.
As I saw on the map on the image, I tried to get to the sea, but it happened to be 11 or 12 kilometers, so I didn't make it, hahaha, I got tired of walking in the midle of nowhere adn went back.
It's a shame that in this town is not where the bridge with the same name is, that sure is worth it.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 8, January 8th

No recuerdo que paso este dia, estoy en blanco. Asi que os dejo una imagen del conjunto de cuatro "casitas" en donde me estuve quedando.

I don't remember what happened this day, I'm completely in a blank. So I leve you an image of the little house complex where I was staying.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 7, January 7th

Ya no llovio este dia, asi que fuimos a hacer lo que el dia anterior no pudimos. Marcamos rumbo a Akihabara a buscar nuestros regalos.
En la zona encontramos un sitio donde comer shabu shabu, que consiste en que en tu misma mesa pones a hervir agua, agregas ingredientes para dar sabor al caldo, y luego vas metiendo trozos finos de carne para ir comiendoltelos. Lo mejor de este sitio es que ademas era buffet libre durante una hora, asi que pudimos comer agusto bastante carne y otras cosas.

It didn't rain this day, so we set out to do what the day before we couldn't. We went to Akihabara te get ourselfs some presents.
On the area we found a place where we could eat shabu shabu, wich consisits in boiling water in your table, you add ingredientes to give flavor to the water, then you put in thin pieces of meat and eat it. The best part it was an all-you-can-eat-for-an-hour, so we helped ourself with meat and other things.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 6, January 6th

Aprovechando el dia de reyes, queriamos ir a comprarnos algun regalo, pero el dia fue lluvioso, asi que una vez mas no salimos de casa. En esta ocacion, Kit-Kat.

Since it was the day for the Three Wise Men, we wanted to get ourselves some presents, but it happened to be a rainy day, so once again we didn't go out. This time, Kit-Kat.

Otro dia de descanso para los viajeros. Dormir, video juegos y actualizar un poco este blog, nada mas paso este dia. Por tanto, un tributo al arcoiris de sabores de Fantas en Japon.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 4, January 4th

Bueno, tras nuestro viaje recorriendo otras partes de Japon, este dia toco descanso, no salimos de casa, solo nos dedicamos a dormir lo mas posible, asi que toca otra ruta culinaria.

Well, after our trip trouhg other parts of Japan, this day was a rest day, we didn't go out from home, we just slept as much as possible, so it's time for another coulinary route.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 3, January 3th

Tomamos un tren muy temprano para llegar a Himeji, para poder ver el castillo de esa ciudad, que es tambien uno original. Solo tuvimos la manana para verlo, porque si no tomabamos el tren de las 11am no lograriamos volver a Togane. Asi que aprovechamos el tiempo lo mejor que pudimos para ver el castillo. Dentro habia armaduras, armas, ropas y otras reliquias. Tomamos el tren de las 11am y llegamos a Togane a media noche.

We took an early train to Himeji, so we could see the castle there, which is also an original one. We had only the morning to see it, since if we didn't took the 11am train, we wouldn't be able to get back to Togane. So we did our best to enjoy the castle in what little time we had. Inside there where armors, weapons, clothes and other relics. Then took the 11am train, and got to Togane at midnight.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 2, Januray 2nd

Por la manana tomamos un tren rumbo a Matsue, ciudad donde queriamos ver varias cosas. Ese dia nos llovio desde que llegamos a la ciudad, pero eso no nos detuvo de hacer nuestro recorrido.
Nuestra primera parada fue en en la que fue casa de Lafcadio Hearm, el primer occidental que escribio cronicas sobre Japon.
Despues fuimos a la que fue una antigua casa de samurais de grado medio, pudimos recorrer la casa, viendo desde fuera las habitaciones, y admirar algunas de las cosas que todavia conservaban de cuando hacia su funcion.

Despues fuimos a ver el castillo de la ciudad, que parece ser que es de los pocos originales, restaurado, pero no es una reconstruccion.
Volvimos a la estacion para tomar un tren hacia Okayama, y asi hacercarnos a donde queriamos ir el ultimo dia de nuestro viaje.
No habiamos hecho reservaciones, asi que tuvimos que buscar hotel, pero ninguno aceptaba tarjeta de credito. Despues de ver 6 o 7 hoteles, encontramos uno que si... un hotel de capsulas. Mi amigo y yo dormimos en capsulas, pero mi amiga tuvo que pedir una habitacion individual, pues las capsulas son solo para hombre. Tambien habia un ofuro, que como era tarde estaba vacio y lo tuvimos mi amigo y yo solo para nosotros.

In the morning we took a train for Matuse, where we wanted to see a couple of things. It rained all day long, but that didn't stop us from sightseeing.
Our first stop was what used to be Lafcadio Hearm's house, the first western to write cronicles about Japan.
We then went to what used to be a medium level samurais' house, we where able to see the all the rooms of the house, from the outside, and admire some of the original things that where used there.
Then we went to see the city's castle, which seams to be one of the few original, fixed, but at least not a reconstruction.
We went back to the station to take a train to Okayama, and get closer to where we wanted to be the next day.
We didn't have reservations, so we had to look for a hotel, but not accepted credit card. After 6 or 7 hotels we finally found one, it was a capsule hotel. My friend (boy) and I slept in capsules, but my other friend (she) had to take a single room, since the capsules are only for men. There was also an ofure, and due to the hour it was empty, so my friend and I had it for ourselves.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 1, January 1st (II)

Lo primero al llegar a Hiroshima fue dejar nuestras cosas en el hotel, pero como no podiamos entrar hasta la tarde y era muy temprano por la manana, no nos quedo mas remedio que irnos a ver la ciudad hasta que fuese hora de que pudiesemos enrar.

En Japon los dias 1, 2 y 3 de enero son festivos, por lo que todo estaba cerrado, solo pudimos ver lo que estaba al aire libre.

Lo primero que vimos fue un parque lleno de todo tipo de monumentos a la paz y en recuerdo a la bomba atomica. Despues vimos el domo de la bomba atomica, es decir, el edificio que quedo en pie.

Luego llegamos a una zona rodeada por una fosa, cruzando el puente habia otra vez zona de puestos de comida, amuletos y suerte, habia ahi un templo budista. Pasamos de largo pues habia mucha gente y encaminamos a lo que nos interesaba dentro de la fosa, el castillo de Hiroshima, que claro esta, como la muchos templos de Japon, es una reconstruccion del original que fue destruido en la guerra. No pudimos entrar al castillo pues estaba cerrado.

Fuimos a comer a un sitio de comida rapida de ramen barato, pero muy bueno. Asi terminamos de pasar el tiempo para ir al hotel, ducharnos y dormirnos desde las 17:00 hrs. hasta el dia siguiente.

The first thing we did when we got to Hirshima was leave our stuff at the hotel, but since we couldn't check in until the afternoon, and it was early in the morning, we had no other choice but to go and see the city until it was time to check in.

In Japana, Januaray 1st, 2nd and 3rd are holiday, so everything was closed, we where only able to see what was in the open.

First we came across a park filled with all kinds of monuments to peace and reminders of the A-Bomb. Then we saw the A-Dome, the building that wast left standing.

Then we came to an area sorounded by a moat of water, crossing the bridge there was a food, charm and luck stands area, there was a Budist temple there. We simply passed by and went to what realy interested us inside the moated area, the Hiroshima Castle, wich of course, as many castles in Japan, was a reconstruction of the original that was destroyed during the war. We couldn't go inside since it was closed.

We went to eat to a ramen fast food place, wich was very good. That way we finished to kill the time to get to the hotel, we took a shower, went to bed at 17:00 hrs. and didn't wake up until the next day.

Tales of Nippon: Enero 1, January 1st (I)

Una vez comenzado el 2007 el movimiento en la zona de los templos habia comenzado, la gente pasaba en masas a travez del templo y una vez salia iba a los altares, puestos de amuletos y de la prediccion de la suerte. Los primeros estaban a la salida del templo y de la playa.

Fuimos tambien a ver uno de los templos budistas atraidos por el sonido de una campana. Subiendo unas largas escaleras habia a la entrada del templo una campana enorme que la cual la gente tocaba para llamar a los espiritus y pedir sus deseos. Este templo tenia varias partes por ver, con budas y estatuas de animales del horoscopo chino.

En este templo sacamos nuestra suerte segun nuestro tipo de sangre y tambien segun el azar. Aprovechamos la fogata que ahi habia para quitarnos el frio del cuerpo.

Dimos otra vuelta por la zona de comida para hacer tiempo en lo que disminuia el numero de gente en los templos. Y asi fue, pudimos tocar la campana del templo budista y ver otras cosas que antes no habiamos podido.

Pasamos la noche recorriendo la zona y despues simplemente esperar la manana junto a la fogata.

Conforme iba saliendo el sol tambien fue subiendo la marea y pudimos admirar el torii en su otra y mas popular presentacion, sobre el agua, valio la pena pasar la noche ahi.

Cansados por el frio y por no dormir tomamos el ferry para volver de la isla y tomar el tren hacia la ciudad donde teniamos reservado hotel, Hirshima.

Once 2007 had started the movement in the temple area started as well, people went trough the temple and once out went to the altars, charm and luck prediction selling places. The first ones where just at the exit of the temple and the beach.
We also went to visit one of the Budist temples atracted by the sound of a bell in the distance. Going up some long stairs there was a huge bell which people rang to call the spirits so to ask for their wish. This temple had different parts to see, with Buda and Chinesse Horoscope Animals statues.
On this temple we got our luck prediction acording to our blood type and acording to pure luck. We used the bonfire in the place to take the cold from our bodies.
We went around the food area again just to kill time until the number of peple in the temples decresed. And so it did, we where able to make the bell at the Budist temple ring and see other things we hadn't been able before.
We spent the night going around and then waited for the morning next to the bonfire.
As the Sun came out, the high tide came too and we where able to see the torii in it's other and most popular way, over the water, it was worth spending the night there.
Tired after not sleeping and helped by the cold, we took the ferry back to mainland and took our train to the destination in wich we had reservations, Hiroshima.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 31, December 31st (II)

Despues de Kobe tomamos rumbo a Mijayima, que es donde decidimos recibir al nuevo ano. Ahi tomamos un ferry para llegar a una parte de la ciudad que esta en una pequena isla. En dicha isla hay unos cuantos templos, tanto sintoistas como budistas, hay ciervos sagrados rondando en libertas y por supesto una extencion de la ciudad, aunque no muy grande. Los ciervos se dejan acariciar, aunque siempre buscan que les des de comer, comen de todo. La gente japonesa tiene el mal habito de darles de comer papel, y no solo comen eso, tambien comen carne y mariscos, si les das de comer te siguen pidiendo mas.

Una vez nos libramos de los ciervos carronyeros, vimos un tanuki blanco, es una especie endemica de Japon, pariente de los mapaches (aunqeu parece un cruce entre un mapache y un zorro) y suele ser de color marron.
Despues hicimos camino a la zona de los templos. En el trayecto habia muchos puestos de comidas distintos, me dedique a probar casi de todo. A la entrada del templo mas importante de la isla, uno sintoista, habia una fila enorme, pues en Japon es costumbre recibir el ano nuevo pasando por el templo a pedir deseo a los espiritus y sacar su suerte para el anyo. Nosotros decidimos no hacer fila durante mas de una hora para eso. Dimos la vuelta por detras de ese templo hacia la salida del mismo donde habia mas cosas, y para nuestra alegria, un camino para bajar una playa.
Esta no es una playa cualquiera, es la playa sobre la que esta contruida el templo sintoista, y mas adentro su torii. La cuestion es que esta playa generalmente no existe, esta bajo el agua, exepto cuando baja la marea y es posible llegar hasta el torii.

Aprovechando que esa noche habia marea baja decidimos hacercarnos hasta el torii, ya que ahi no habia casi nadie. Ahi fue donde recibimos al 2007, sin mas cuenta atras que la de unos jovenes japoneses que tambien estaban ahi bajo la luz de una luna casi llena.

Right afeter Kobe we made way to Miyajima, which is where we decided to recieve the new year. There we boarded a ferry that took us to a part of the city that is on a little island. On such island one can find a few temples, both Sintoist and Budist, there are sacred deer roaming around freely and of course a not to big part of the city.

The deer are used to humans so one can pet them, but they are always looking to being fed, they will eat anything. The Japanese have the bad habbit of feeding them paper, and they will not only eat that, they will also eat meat and sea-food, if you feed them they'll hunt you down for more.

Once we got free from the scavanger deer, we saw a white tanuki, a species that can only be found in Japan, and that is a cousin of the rakoons (it looks more like a cross between a rakoon and a fox) and it's usually brown.

After that we made our way to the temple area. On the way there where all kinds of food stands and I did my best to try as much as I could of what they had to offer. At the entrance of the most important temple of the island, a Sintoist one, there was a huge line, in Japan it's a costum to recieve the new year going to a temple to ask wishes to the spirits and get their year luck prediction. We decided not to stand in such line for more than an hour just for that. We went around the temple to the exit area where there where more things, and to our luck a way down to the beach.

That is not your average beach, it's a beach on which the Sintoist temple is built, and deeper in it it's torii. Geenraly that beach doesn't exist, it's underwater, except when there's a low tide and one can get as far as the torii.

Since there was a really low tide that night we decided to make it all the way to the torii, since there was practically no one there. That is where we recieved 2007, with no other countdown than the one made by some Japanese youth that was also there under the light of an almost Full Moon.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 31, December 31st (I)

Ya que lo importate de este dia es por la noche, pero muy noche, por la manana fuimos a la ciudad de Kobe, pues un companero de universidad (Autonoma de Barcelona) de mis amigos estaba ahi por ano nuevo visitando a su novia. Estuvimos dando vueltas por la ciudad y terminasmo en algo que podriamos llamar un barrio extrangero, primero pasamos por una calle musulmana donde habia una mesquita, entre la gente y el edificio parecia que estabamos en otro pais. Despues habia una calle llena de casas de madera estilo occidental, ademas de edificios con banderas de Espana, Italia y Francia.

A la hora de la comida decidimos buscar un sitio donde vendisen cierta carte tipica de Kobe, que consiste en carne de vaca alimentada con cerveza. Supuestamente ademas de ser muy deliciosa es muy blanda y suave. Nos tomo alrededor de una hora encontrar un sitio que la vendiese, pero para nuestra desgracia esa carne tiene unos precios exorbitantes y tuvimos que dejarlo pasar.

Since the important part of this day is late at night, we went to Kobe City in the morning, since a classmate from my friends' university (Autonoma de Barcelona) was there visiting his girlfriend for the new year. We wandered around the city and ended up in what we could call a foreign part of the city, first we went trough a Muslim street with a Muslim temple, between the people and the temple it seemed as if we where in another country. After that we came into a street with occidental woden-style houses, plus buildings with flags from Spain, Italy and France.

At lunch time we decided to look for a place where they served a certain type of meet from Kobe, wich consists in cow that was fed with beer. It's suposed to be a very delicious and tender meat. It took us about an hour to find such a place, but unfortunately that meet has some really rocketed prices and so we had to let it be.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 30, December 30th

Nuestra travesia a pie comienza en Osaka, nuestro hotel estando en lo que la guia llama "la zona mas decadente de la ciudad". Nos hicimos camino a travez de un parque y un zoologico (que estaba cerrado) hasta llegar a un templo importante de la ciudad.

Despues de eso fuimos a lo que realmente nos interesaba de la ciudad, Den Den Town, considerado el hermano menor de Akihabara, aunque en nuestra opinion en cuestion de figuras de manga, anime y video juegos lo supera, en electronicos seguramente no, y en manga estara igual. Estuvimos siete horas recorriendo esa zona de la ciudad, viendo muchas tiendas y comprando. Nos detuvimos a comer en un puesto de ramen (al estilo Naruto, aunque con puertas de cristal en lugar de cortinas, cosa que agradecimos debido al frio). Seguimos nuestro recorrido, centrandonos mas en tiendas de figuras y video juegos, pues se hacia tarde.

Para cenar llegamos a una zona muy animada de la ciudad, llena de luces, restaurantes y mucha gente por la calle. Casi todo estaba saturado, estuvimos dando vueltas un buen rato hasta encontrar un sitio donde preparaban okonomiyaki, que estaba delicioso.

Volvimos al hotel no muy tarde para llegar a tiempo al ofuro, un banyo tipico japones cerrado (como el que se ve en los dibujos como Chin-Chan). Habia bastante gente, aunque yo no tuve problema alguno y me duche y luego meti al agua caliente sin reparo alguno, a mi amigo no le fue tan sencillo, le intimidaba un poco el que hubiese tanto hombre duchandose y en el agua caliente al mismo tiempo.

Our on-foot journy starts in Osaka, our hotel was in what the guide described as the "most decay part of the city". We made our way trough a park and a zoo (wich was closed) until we got to an important temple in the city.

Then we headed for what really interested us in Osaka, Den Den Town, which is considered Akihabara's little brother, but in our opinion it's quite better if you are looking for manga, anime and video game figures, it's probably not better in electronics, and in manga is just about the same. We spent 7 hours going around that area, visiting many stores and buying. We made a stop to eat at a ramen place (Naruto style, but with glass dors instead of cloth courtains, we where grateful due to the cold outside). We continued, centering ourselves on figures and video game stores, since it was getting late.

For dinner time, we arrived at a very lively part of the city, filled with lights, restaurants and a lot of people on the streets. Almost everything was full, we had to circle around for a while until we finally came to a place where they served oknomiyaki, wich was delicious.

We went back to the hotel not to late so we could make it time to the ofuro, a typical indoor Japanse bath (like the ones seen in animes such as Chin-Chan). There where quite some poeple in there, I didn't had any problem, I went in, took a shower and then got into the hot water without a worry, but it wasn't that easy for my friend, he got intimidated by so many men shawering and in the hot watter at the same time.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 29, December 29th

Compramos un billete (boleto) de tren especial por estas fechas, en el que por 10000 yenes (65 euros, 910 pesos) puedes viajar 5 dias, uno elige los dias, en todo los trenes (los dos o tres tipos mas lentos) y metros de Japan Rail que quieras. Aporvechamos para practicamente atravesar el pais de este a oeste y de regreso.
Ese dia queriamos ir por la manana al Comifest (un evento donde venden doujins, mangas dibujados por fans haciendo historias originales o usando series ya existentes) antes de partir de viaje, pero nos quedamos dormidos.
Asi que salimos directamente para Osaka, aunque como eran los trenes lentos y semilentos, nos tomo 12 horas de viaje llegar hasta dicha ciudad. Durante el camino pudimos ver claramente el monte Fuji, como el tren tomaba rutas alternas tambien pasamos por zonas donde estaba nevando fuertemente, aunque no pudimos parar a disfrutar de la nieve. El viaje lo pasamos jugando video juegos (mientras duro la bateria) y charlando.

We bought a special train ticket for the hollidays, which for 10000 yens (65 euros, 910 pesos) allow you to travel for 5 days, you choose teh days, using any train (from the two or three slowest ones) and subways of Japan Rail you wish. We used this to travel across the country from East to West and back.
On that day we wanted to go to the Comifest (an event where they sell doujins, mangas drawn by fans either making their own stories or using existin ones) before we left on our trip, but we overslept.
So we left directly for Osaka, but since we used the slow trains, we had a 12 hour trip to get to the city. On the way there we had a clear view of mount Fuji, and since the train took alternative routs we also saw some snow and it was snowing in some towns, but we couldn't stop to enjoy the snow. We spent the trip playing video games (while the batteries lasted) and talking.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 28, December 28th

En este dia, al igual que en otras fechas que no aparecen en la cronologia, son dias en los que ya sea por descansar o alguna otra razon no hicimos nada, o al menos no fuimos a ningun lado. Asi que he decidido aprovechar estos dias "muertos" para mostraros algunos de los platillos que he probado.

On this day, the same as on those that do not apear on this cronology, are days in which that either because we rested or another reason we didn't do anything, or at least didn't go anywhere. So, I have decided to use this "blank" days to show you some of the things I've tasted.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 27, December 27th

Este dia tuve que darme un tour yo solo, asi que me fui a una ciudad que esta cerca de Togane, a Chiba. Fui sin saber que es lo que hay en esta ciudad, sin mapa ni nada, totalmente a explorar y a la aventura.

Una vez ahi elegi rumbo al azar, paseando por las calles que parecian tener mas vida, comprando comida y bebida por el camino. Lo primero interesante que me encontre en mi camino fue un tren que lleva las vias en la parte superior.

Explorando mas, encontre una zona de tiendas, entre ellas me parecio encontrar una de manga, pues podia leer la palabra pero no el resto del texto, y como en los pisos inferiores a dicha tienda habia algo que decia "girls only", aunque eran en otras plantas, opte por no entrar debido a mi ignorancia en esos temas.

Caminando un poco mas encontre un local de video juegos, entre por curiosidad sin intencion de jugar, pero encontre algo a lo que no podia resistirme probar... Un simulador de mechas, es decir, esos robots gigantes que vemos en el anime (como Robotech y Gundam, en este caso era del segundo). Primero tuve que hacerme una tarjeta de piloto y despues pude jugar, me costo un poco averiguar como. La tarjeta va guardando tus datos y puntos, asi puedes ir actualizando tu mecha, y cada vez que juegas tienes los datos en la tarjeta.

Por la noche fui con mis amigos a cenar a un kaiten sushi, es decir, el sushi va pasando en una banda corrediza y tu vas tomando de ahi lo que quieres comer, al final cuentan tus platos y se paga segun lo que uno come. Me comi 13 platos de sushi y 5 de postre.

On this day I had to get a self guided tour, so I chose the nearby city of Chiba. I went there without knowing what was there, whithout a map or anything, just out to explore and for the adventure.

Once there I chose direction out of mere luck, going trought the streets that looked more lively, buying food and drinks on the way. The first interesting thing that I found was a train with the rails on the upper side.

Exploring a bit more, I found an area with stores, within them I think I found one that sold manga, or so I managed to read, but I couldn't read the rest of the text, and since on the floors inferior to that one had "Girls only" signs, I didn't risk it, since I couldn't read what was on those floors and I have no idea about that kind of places.

Walking some more I came across a vide arcade, I went inside to look around without the intention of playing, but then I saw something that I just couldn't pass by... A mecha simulator, those giant robots we see in anime (like Robotech and Gundma, this ones where of the second ones). First I had to get myself a pilot card and then I could play, it took a bit of an effort to find out how. The card keeps record of your data and points, it allows you to upgrade your mecha as you play, and each time you play you have your data on the card.

At night I went to have dinner with my friends to a kaiten sushi, a place where sushi goes around on a giratory thing, you just pick up what you want to eat, at the end they count your plates and you pay acording on how much you eat. I ate 13 sushi plates and 5 dessert plates.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 25, December 25th

Como mi amigo tenia que trabajar (trabaja en Square Enix traduciendo la adaptacion de Final Fantasy VI para GBA), lo fuimos a dejar a su trabajo y despues mi amiga (su novia) y yo nos fuimos a Shinyuku, que es la zona de los rascacielos. Subimos al edificio en el que se encuentra el ayuntamiento, ya que en la planta 42 hay un mirador. Desafortunadamente el dia estaba con algo de bruma o niebla y no se podia preciar mucho, pero en muy buen dia desde ahi se puede llegar a ver hasta el monte Fuji.

A la hora de la comida fuimos a buscar a mi amigo al trabajo y fuimos los tres a comer a un restaurante indu, muy buena por cierto, y con un sabor distinto a la comida indu que habia probado en otros sitios, tal vez al estar mas cerca de la India... Despues lo devolvimos a su trabajo.

Emprendimos camino al Meiji Jingu, templo sintoista mas importante de Tokyo, aunque entramos por otro lado, no por Harayuku. Dentro del templo vimos como estaban llevando acabo los preparativos para ano nuevo. Compramos un par de amuletos tipicos y en lo personal puse una tablilla con un deseo en el arbol sagrado.

A la vuelta para recoger a mi amigo e irnos a casa, tomamos la salida de Harayuku y estuvimos zigzageando entre calles y parques.

Since my friend had to go to work (he works at Square Enix, translating the Final Fantasy VI for GBA version), we took him there and then my other friend (his girlfriend) and I went to Shinyuku, which is where all the skyscrapers are. We went into the building where the Town Hall is, since it has a viewpoint in the 42nd floor. Unfortunately there was a bit of fog that day and we couldn't see much, but on really good days it's even posible to see Mount Foji from up there.

At lunch time we went to look for my friend and the three of us went to eat to an Indian restaurant, quite good by the way, it had a different flavor from other Indian restaurants in which I have eaten, maybe being closer to India... After that we took him back to his work.

We made way to Meiji Jingu, the most important Sintoist temple in Tokyo, but we went in trough another entrance, not Harayuku. Inside the temple we saw how they where preparing for the New Year. We bough a couple of charms (amulets) and as for me, I hanged a wish on the sacred tree.

On the way back to pick up my friend from work, we just walked trough different streets and a couple of parks.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 24, December 24th

Akihabara, zona de electronica por exelencia de Japon, tambien buen sitio para econtrar manga, anime y merchandising de todo tipo. Pasamos la mayor parte del dia ahi, recorriendo tiendas de 7 y 8 plantas, comimos en un sitio de comida rapida de gyudon (arroz con carne) y seguimos viendo tiendas.
Despues hubo que dejar de seguir nuestro ameno recorrido, ya que teniamos que ir a una casa de una chica Espanola a cenar. En dicha cena habia gente de distintos paises, mi amigo y yo no conociamos a nadie. Nosotros dos queriamos haber hecho algo distinto esa noche aprovechando el pais en el que estabamos, karaoke o algo, pero no nos quedo mas remedio. Fue una cena sin nada destacable y pasando frio.

En la television no habia nada por la fecha, puesto que la Navidad es una fiesta cristiana, y solo el 1% de la poblacion lo es. Por tanto, la Navidad aqui es algo puramente comercial (regalos, adornos y esas cosas) y superfluo, y es una fecha que sirve de escusa para que las parejas "celebren" juntos sin falta. Ademas, el dia 25 es laboral.

Akihabara, Japan's best place for electronics, also a great place to find manga, anime and merchandising of all sorts. We spent most of our day there, going trought 7 and 8 floor stores, we ate at a gyudon (rice with meat) fast food place, then continued our store cruzade.

We had to stop our merry rute, since we had to go to a Spanish girl's house for dinner. There where people from different countries at the dinner, my friend and I knew nobody. Both of us would have liked to do something different that night, since we where in such a different country, karaoke or something, but we didn't have a choice. It was a dinner with nothing to say about it and a cold night.

There was nothing on Tv for that date, since Christmas is a Cristian holliday, and only 1% of the people are so. So, X-Mas is purely something shallow and comercial, and it's only an excuse for couples to "celebrate" together without fail. Besides, the 25th is a work day.

Tales of Nippon: Dicimebre 23, December 23rd

Una visita a Shibuya y a Harayuku. El primero es el sitio donde se encuentra el famoso cruce que se ve en muchos animes y en la pelicula "Lost in Translation", es un punto de encuentro para muchos, simplemente la imagen es espectacular. En Shibuya encontramos un StarBucks que tiene unas vistas de la zona muy buenas, tiendas varias, karaokes y restaurantes. Ademas de una estatua a un perro con una historia de lealtad conmovedora.

Cuenta la historia que el perro, llamado Hachiko, acompanaba todas las mananas a su amo hasta la estacion de metro, y por las tardes iba a buscarlo a la hora que volvia del trabajo. Sucedio un dia que el amo murio antes de volver, Hachiko fue a buscarlo como siempre, pero su amo no volvia, asi que todos los dias iba a buscarlo, hasta que al final murio. La gente de la zona conocia al perro desde antes de que muriese su amo, y por su lealtad hasta la muerte pusieron la estatua.

En Harayuku, encontramos una de las entradas al templo sintoista mas importante de Tokyo. En el puente de la entrada se suelen reunir las personas que hacen Cosplay (costume play) o que se visten como las munecas de porcelana. Tambien hay muchas tiendas de ropa de todo tipo. Aqui encontre chocolate Wonka. De Charlie y la fabrica de chocolate.


A small visit to Shibuya and Harayuku. The first one is where we find the famous street crossing we always see in animes and in the movie "Lost in Translation", it's a meeting point for many, the sight is simply spectacular. In Shibuya we find a StarBucks with a magnificent view of the area, different kinds of stores, karaokes, and restaurants. There's also a statue of a dog, which has a touching loyality story behind.

The story says that the dog, named Hachiko, walked his master every morning to the subway station and went to pick him up when he came back from work. It happened one day that his master died before he came back, Hachiko went to look for him that day like always, but he didn't come back, so he went to look for him every day, until he finaly died. The people from the are know the dog even before his master died, so they placed the statue due to his loyality until the end.

In Harayuku we find one of the entrances to the most important Sintoist temple in Tokyo. At the entrance bridge is where the Cosplay (costume play) people hang around. There are also all kinds of clothing stores. Here is where I found Wonka chocolate, from Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Tales of Nippon: Diciembre 21, December 21st

Disculpen la tardanza (y las faltas de ortografia, pero este teclado no tiene todos los elementos del espanol, y no hay forma de que en Word encuentre el corrector de ortografia), pero entre una cosa y otra no habia podido tener todo lo necesario para poner entradas en el blog, ya fuese falta del cable de la camara, falta de tiempo o falta de internet. En cualquier caso, aqui va...

La manana que llegue, lo primero fue que mis maletas se quedaron en Paris, por el retraso de mi vuelo apenas y tuve tiempo yo de cambiar de avion, mis maletas no. Al menos asi no tuve que cargar nada hasta llegar al pequeno y tetirado pueblo de Togane (a una hora al sur-este de Tokyo aprox.). Una vez llegar tuve que ir a comprar un poco de ropa (pues mis maletas tardarian un dia en llegar), articulos de higiene personal y de paso comida, oportunidad que aproveche para comenzar a degustar de la variedad gastronomica que este pais me ofrece. Comence con onigiri (triangulos de arroz rellenas de algo y envueltas en nori(algas)), carnes rebosadas, chocolates de aqui y nuevas bebidas.

Fue muy grato reencontrarme con mis amigos despues de tanto tiempo, fue un reencuentro muy alegre. Por lo mismo que este fue el dia de llegar, y con otras cosas por arreglar, no hice mucho mas que ponerme al dia con ellos.

Sorry for the delay, but due to the lack of elements such as the cable for the camera, time or internet I was not able to update my blog until now. Anyways, here we go...

On the morning I got here, the first thing was that my luggage was left behing in Paris, due to the delay on the arrival of my flight, I barely had time to change flights myself, but my luggage didn't make it. At least that way i didn't had to carry my luggage all the way to the small and quiet town of Togane (an hour South-East from Tokyo). Once here I had to buy some clothes (since my luggage would take a day to get here), personal hygene items and why not, food, an oportunity that I used to start tasting the gastronomic rainbow of oportunities that this country has to offer me. I started with onigiri (rice triangles filled with something and wraped in nori (seaweed)), meat, local chocolate, and new drinks.

It was great to meet again with my friends again after half a year, we had a lot of catching up to do. Since this was the day that I arrived, we didn't do pretty much besides catching up.
